ROCK CLIMBING IN SMITH ROCK STATE PARK
Smith Rock is located in Central Oregon, near the town of Terrebonne, the Deschutes River, and the adventure town of Bend. Smith Rock State park covers over 650 acres and hovers around 3000 feet in elevation. The major climbing faces are a mix welded tuff and columnar basalt volcanic rocks. Being the high desert, the shoulder seasons of Fall and Spring are the best times to avoid the scorching hot summer days. Nearby camping and vacation home options provide accommodation and can be easily arranged. Smith Rock State Park is known as the birthplace of sport climbing in the United States and to this day offer some of the best rock climbing routes in the country. Smith Rock also has really good crack climbing! Whether you are climbing the welded tuff pockets on the Christian Brothers or the cracks on basalt pillars of the Crooked River Gorge, there is a strong variety of climbing for all types. Looking for a short or a prolonged visit? Either way a visit to Smith is a must do.
