This course is an expansion on your fundamental backcountry splitboarding course and/or AIARE 1 avalanche course. Your AMGA trained splitboard guide will provide tour planning tools useful in backcountry snowboarding, as well as show you how to find good quality riding conditions while also maximizing safety. This course is a great way to gain mentorship after having completed your AIARE 1 avalanche course.

Topics covered
Tour Planning for the splitboarder (use of various mapping apps and tour planning tools to avoid traverses, benches, and flat terrain)
Equipment choice for advanced movement (hardboot setups, soft boot binding and boot selection to maximize for uphill efficiency)
Avalanche beacon safety check
Track setting fundamentals
Advanced movement skills for backcountry riding (e.g. split-skiing, snowboard technique, managing steep entrances, efficient transitions to bootpacking and skinning, etc)
Linking how to find good snow with avalanche avoidance
Itinerary
8:45 AM: Meet at the Mountain Bureau meeting location designated in the welcome email to the clinic.
9:00 AM: Guide orientation of avalanche rescue + tour planning demo.
9:45 AM: Guide conducts trailhead avalanche safety check with group and group departs trailhead
9:45 AM-2:00 pm: Group is out in the field in the Alpental backcountry area practicing skills pertaining to topics covered.
3:00 PM: Arrive back at Splitfest base area finished with tour, enlightened by skills learnt and ready to utilize skills learned.

PREREQUISITE EXPERIENCE OR SKILLS
Participants should be able to ride in-bound “Blue Square” runs in all snow conditions (in control). Participants should have basic uphill fitness and be able to walk uphill with a light (approx. 20lbs.) backpack.
Minimum Age
Students 16-17 years old, with consent from a parent or guardian and prior approval by The Mountain Bureau (please call or email prior to enrolling)
